Sharon Affeldt > Father 02.01.17

  • Marlin Affeldt Obituary Photos

  • Marlin (Bud) Darwin Affeldt died February 1, 2017 at the age of 90 years.

Marlin was born October 13, 1926 to Walter and Francis (Anderson) Affeldt near Miltona, MN in Douglas County. He was baptized on May 15, 1927 at Svea Lutheran Church in Miltona, MN and on 10-5-1941 was confirmed there. He was 1 of 7 children. He attended country school in Miltona until moving to Alexandria where he continued his education through 8th grade. From 1943 to 1945 he was employed as a carpenter apprentice for St Anthony and Dakota Elevator Co. In 1945 Marlin joined the Army at Fort Snelling, MN. He went on to complete paratrooper training at Fort Hood in Texas. While stationed there he injured his leg and knee during a jump. For rehab he was sent to Oregon and then returned to Texas to retrain for the Military Police Corp as a prison guard. In 1946 he went to Sheridan, Ill. where he received an honorable discharge as a result of demobilization.

On returning to Alexandria, MN he started training as a brick mason. It was at this time that he met and married his first wife, Verna Johnson also of Alexandria, MN, on Dec. 31, 1946. For the next 16 years his work as a brick mason would take him all around North Dakota and South Dakota building churches, schools and hospitals. During this time they had two sons, Gerold Dean and Brent Alan and two daughters, Sharon Kay and Debra Rae. On Oct. 15, 1962 their divorce was finalized. Marlin remained in North Dakota. It was there that he met Vivian Ostrem of Rugby, North Dakota. They were married June 8, 1965. They chose to settle in Fargo, ND and in 1967 they were blessed with a daughter, Denise Ann. She kept them extremely busy especially during her school years and they loved going to school activities together. Marlin worked for companies based in Fargo and Minneapolis, MN, often commuting to Minneapolis on a weekly basis. When he didn't feel like driving all the way back to Fargo he would drive down to Cannon Falls, MN and spend the weekend with his daughter and family and on some of those weekends Vivian would join him. Marlin was very proud of the work he did in the Fargo area such as the Bethlehem Lutheran Church monument, high-rise and Bethany Nursing Home. The nursing home was where he and Vivian had planned to retire when the time came but sadly for Marlin, Vivian left him too soon. Vivian remained the love of his life and he has now gone on to be with her in their new world. Marlin was active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a very avid bowler and also loved duck and pheasant hunting along with fishing. He enjoyed pro football and high school basketball. He and Vivian loved company and always welcomed friends, family and neighbors with coffee and warm conversations. Later he enjoyed going to casinos with his coffee buddies, and if you called him on a Sunday morning he would tell you he was at church - he was watching his favorite church service on the TV which he called the idiot box. He lived a full life and will be greatly missed by all. The stories and memories of him will be kept in our hearts forever.

Survivors include son, Gerold Dean; daughters, Sharon (Dennis) Nack, Debra (Leon) Klinghagen, Denise (Jeff) Boudreaux; daughter-in-law, Debbie (Brent) Affeldt; 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; sisters, DeLoyce (John) Novak and Ardys (Phil) Pantlin, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Honoring Erika's (TIMM) memory

    Honoring Erika's memory

When their mother Erika was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, Ben and Jake Rodriguez were 2 years old. Now age 7, the boys are raising money to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. (contributed)1 / 2
Jake and Ben Rodriguez were only 3 years old when their mother Erika Rodriguez passed away after battling acute myeloid leukemia for nine months.

Now, four years later, the twin boys are keeping their mother's memory alive and have been named the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Boys of the Year.
"It's incredible what they remember," said Jeff Timm, Erika's father and the boys' grandfather. "They talk about her all the time."
In March 2012, while living in Alexandria, Erika was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia after going to the doctor for ongoing headaches. She was taken to the University of Minnesota Medical Center, and remained there for nine months, until she lost the fight with cancer.
Though Ben and Jake were young when they lost their mother, they remember her. In the time since Erika's death, her husband Sam has remarried and moved to Maple Grove. He says his wife, Katie, has played a large role in encouraging the boys to fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and to remember their mother, who was a friend of hers.
"In elementary school, the boys had a program that was called Pennies for Patients," Sam said. "They brought home their box and their job was to go around and get people to donate toward the LLS. ... The school had hoped to raise $2,000 for kindergarten through sixth grade, and Ben and Jake raised nearly $4,000 with the help of Katie."
After raising the money last year, Ben and Jake were honored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Then this year, they were honored again, as each year the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society chooses a man and woman of the year and a girl and boy of the year. The 2017 girls of the year were twin sisters who are both survivors of leukemia.
Due to their fundraising efforts, the Rodriguez twins seemed like a natural choice for the boys of the year.
"Because they were doing twin sisters, they chose the boys as the Boys of the Year because leukemia affects more than just the person who has it," Sam said. "It also affects the family."
Now, the boys are trying to raise $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by May 20.
"They're not only giving money themselves, but also going door to door to tell their story about what their mom went through," Sam said. "They're also asking people if they have any chores. They're trying to be proactive and do something besides just asking for money."
Sam says the Rodriguez family will continue to honor Erika and remember her, as well as fundraise to aid in finding a cure for cancer.
"We try to keep her spirit alive as much as we can," Sam said. "They definitely know who their mom was as a person. We're making something positive out of a terrible tragedy, and we've been very blessed in the joy we've found since then."
Donations to this cause can be made by visiting events.lls.org/pages/mn/boysoftheyear and a video about the Rodriguez family can be viewed at www.vimeo.com/184246668.
