Classmate > Leon Zavadil 07.14.2013



Pastor Leon Zavadil    
Pastor Leon Zavadil, 63, Moorhead, MN died on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the VA Hospital, Fargo, ND.   Leon Zavadil was born on Aug. 29, 1949 to Edwin and Sylvia (Malmborg) Zavadil in Alexandria, MN.
He attended Lake Mary County School District 13 and graduated in 1967 from Jefferson High School, Alexandria. In 1971, he graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead. After his tour of duty in Vietnam, Leon taught music 1 year in the Alexandria school system. He then returned to MSUM and received his Masters in Music. For several years Leon was a vocalist and instrumentalist in a band called "Rhapsody" which toured the United States. 
On May 27, 1978, Leon married Katherine Stoffel and they were blessed with a son Christopher. Leon was employed by the US Postal Service for several years and after much soul searching Leon decided to attend Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. In 1998, The Reverend Leon Zavadil was ordained as an ELCA Lutheran Minister at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. For 9 ½ years he served First Lutheran Church of Enderlin, ND and Filmore Lutheran and they were blessed with his humor and kindness.
On October 22, 2005, Leon married Peggy Gay. In 2007, Leon and Peggy moved to Jamestown, ND and for 5 ½ years he served Trinity Lutheran Church. While there, great kindness was shown by the congregation. In May of 2013, Leon was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
 
Leon is survived by his wife, Peggy (Gay) Zavadil; his son Christopher; his brother Gary (Carol) Zavadil; his sister-in-law Estella Zavadil and many nieces and nephews.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Sylvia (Malmborg) Zavadil, his brothers, Daryl and his wife Bonnie, Gaylen Zavadil, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Visitation: Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 5 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND.      Funeral: Friday at 1 PM at First Lutheran Church, Fargo. 
Burial: Saturday at 10:30 AM at Bohemian Independent Cemetery, Alexandria.

Ken Dyrstad > Wife

Diane E. Dyrstad, age 67, Tulsa, Oklahoma, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from congestive heart failure.
 
Diane was cremated and a private family service will be held in Caney, Kansas, where her parents preceded her in death.

Diane was born to Jack Westly Benefiel and Janet Colleen Carrick on August 28, 1946 in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Dyrstad of Tulsa; stepson, Tony Dyrstad of Tulsa; daughter, Heather Dufoe of Tulsa; grandsons, Noah and Jamison Dufoe of Tulsa; mother-in-law, Violet Dyrstad of Alexandria; brother-in-law, Curt Dyrstad (Diane) of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Carol Larsen (Kevin) of Little Falls; and sister-in-law, Connie Rosengren (Rick) of Alexandria.
 
The family would like to thank St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa for all their support and loving care for Diane

Tom Hollingsworth > Wife 03.04.2013

Tom's wife, Virginia, died Monday March 4 after a three year battle with cancer.

Linda Black > Mother 02.26.13

          Mary Ann Black, age 92, passed away peacefully February 26, 2013.
Mary Ann was born in Belle River Township on August 5, 1920 to John and Abby Patrick. She grew up on a farm in Belle River and attended school in Belle River Township. As a young woman, she worked at Miller’s Inn and Hillside Club in Alexandria. On June 13, 1944, she was united in marriage to Percy Black in Belle River. The couple called several places home and worked many jobs together. As a young couple they were part of a band called the 4 Stars and played at many barn dances. Mary Ann was the drummer. They also hung wallpaper and farmed for a living. In 1958, they moved from the Black family farm to a new home in Carlos MN where they started Black’s Plumbing and Heating. Mary Ann always had a huge garden and enjoyed sewing, hunting and fishing. Many fish fries were held at the Black residence in Carlos for relatives and friends visiting from all over the country. She had a passion for flowers and visiting. She absorbed all of the details of a visit and was able to apply stories and events to her life. She was a loving mother, grandma and great grandma who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
After living at her home in Carlos for 52 years, Mary Ann moved on to another fresh start in October of 2011 when she moved to Grand Arbor in Alexandria. There she started another adventure in life where new friends and all the activities kept her so busy she had to make time to rest.
Mary Ann is survived by her son Darrell (Gail) Black of Apple Valley, daughter Linda (Dick) Wetterling of Kensington; 6 grandchildren, Denise (Jay) Petsche, Craig (Denaya) Black, Curt Black, Jennifer (Kyle) Kangas, Melissa Wetterling, and Michael (Heidi) Wetterling; 4 great grandchildren, Dylan and Kaitlyn Petsche, and Maggie and Madalyn Kangas. One brother, Richard Patrick, one sister, Mildred (Jack) Sigfrid, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Abby, husband Percy, and 9 brothers and sisters.
A Mass will be held for Mary Ann on Saturday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River with Fr. Dave Petron officiating. Musician is Sami Steidl whose violin music was so enjoyed by Mary Ann. Interment is at St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons Craig Black, Curt Black, and Michael Wetterling and Honorary Pallbearers were her grandchildren and great grandchildren

Doug Drexler > Mother 02.10.13

Gladys DrexlerGladys Drexler, age 93 of Nelson, passed peacefully into her new life on Sunday evening, February 10, 2013 at the Community Memorial Home in Osakis, MN.
On June 26, 1919 a baby girl was born to Edward and Marie (Christopherson) Granlund at their home in Belle River Township, Douglas County, MN. She graduated from Alexandria High School in 1938 and worked for a time doing retail sales. On June 18, 1942 Gladys was united in marriage to Harvey Drexler at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River. They farmed for many years in Belle River Township, finally selling their dairy herd in the 1970's. From 1968 to 1985 Gladys also worked as a cook at the Carlos Elementary School. For over 17 years she helped make wholesome school lunches that satisfied many hungry appetites. Over the years she also raised chickens and sold eggs. She was a member of St. Nicholas Church in Belle River and served in many ways, including on the church council, as a member of the St. Ann's Sodality and also as past president of the Ladies Guild.
Gladys had many various interests and talents. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens and had a knack for growing things. Her home was always decorated with the many beautiful flowers she'd grow each season. Another of her talents was doing crafts such as embroidery and other needlework. Many projects were completed each winter to be given as gifts to lucky family members and friends. Other hobbies such as bowling, square dancing and playing cards (especially Whist) with her Miltona card club also kept her busy. In her retirement years Gladys enjoyed travelling and taking in area social events with a local Red Hat club. She was a loving mother, grandma and great grandma who will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Blessed be her memory.
She is survived by her sons, Joe (Beth) Drexler of Hastings, MN and Doug Drexler of Park City, UT; 4 grandchildren, Lori (John) Springer, Eric (Kathy) Drexler, Amy Bates and Mya Drexler; 7 great grandchildren, Riley & Rory Bates, Emma, Ella and Annie Springer, Samuel & Grace Drexler; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, Harvey (1995) and a granddaughter, Kimberly Drexler; brothers, Forest and Gordon Granlund and a sister, Effie Granlund.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held for Gladys on Saturday, February 16 at 11 am at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River with Fr. Dave Petron officiating. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Lori Springer, Amy Bates, Eric and Mya Drexler and the Red Hats Club members. Active pallbearers are Gary Botzet, Mike Hauer, Gail Landeen, Tom Toenjes, Brian Doucette and Ken Olson.

Sandy Rosengren > Mother 01.16.13

        Margaret Louise (Anderson) Rosengren, age 90, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 16, 2013.
Margaret was born July 6, 1922 in Minneapolis to Victor and Emelia (Ostlund) Anderson. She graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis and attended one year at Augsburg College for nursing.
At the age of 16, Margaret attended Lake Koronis Bible Camp, where she met Wally. They were united in marriage on November 26, 1943, at First Evangelical Free Church in Minneapolis. They had 67 wonderful years together.
Margaret was a homemaker and an amazing seamstress. Her daughters and daughter-in-law were proud to wear wedding dresses that she created. She made all the clothing for her children when they were young, including coats. She even sewed for friends outside the family.
Margaret was a devout Christian and an active member of Alexandria Covenant Church, which she and Wally joined just one year after it was established. She did the church bulletin for more than 20 years, played the piano for 31 years, and sang in the choir for 50 years. She was involved in missionary circle and women’s Bible studies.
Margaret enjoyed reading and embroidery, which she taught to her granddaughters. She loved her family, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family gatherings at the Lake Ida cabin were very special to her. She and Wally loved to travel, making three trips to Sweden and visiting all but two of the United States. They spent 18 winters in Arizona, two in Florida and one in Texas, making many good friends and memories.
She is survived by her children, Carol Latterell of Woodbury, Sandy McLauchlin of Minneapolis, Marie Rosengren (Michael Monahan) of Longmont, CO, and Gary (Lisa) Rosengren of Brooklyn Park; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Harold Engberg of Minneapolis; and nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Rosengren; two sons-in-law, Dennis McLauchlin and Tom LaHerell; and sister, Marilyn Engberg.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the staff at Nelson Gables. Margaret was a resident there the past five years and enjoyed her life there very much.
A funeral service was held Monday, January 21 at Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria with the Rev. John LeVahn officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mertice Brueske, soloist, Don Gilberg, and pianist, Nancy Holm. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Casket bearers were John Kelly, Christian Earle, Brett Latterell, Brandon Latterell, Adam Rosengren and Erik Monahan. Honorary casket bearers were Andrea Kelly, Kristen Rosengren, Kelly Rosengren and Kathleen Monahan.
